The Indian Express reported that the Major, whose identity remains undisclosed, was from the 63 Rashtriya Rifles regiment. The joint operation also resulted in the death of one militant.

Intelligence reports about the presence of terrorists in the forest area prompted the initiation of an operation by the army’s special forces and police. The dense forests of Pir Panjal in Jammu and Kashmir have been a significant challenge for security forces over the past few years due to a series of encounters. Terrorists use the dense forests and the topography to their advantage to conceal their locations.

Militants ambushed the special forces dispatched to recover the body of a Major during the operation, resulting in injuries to three soldiers. One of the injured soldiers later succumbed to his injuries.

Police sources confirmed that the encounter, which began on Wednesday morning, involved an estimated five to six heavily armed militants entrenched within the dense forests. The encounter began when the militants fired upon a joint search party of the police and security forces conducting a cordon and search operation in the area.

Continuous firing from the militants prevented the retrieval of the body of a deceased militant located within the forest, as reported by a police official.

Previous Operations

Last Friday marked one of the most intense gun battles this year in the Union Territory, with security forces eliminating five terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in the Kulgam district of south Kashmir. Several of these individuals were implicated in attacks on Pandits and migrant laborers earlier this year.

The five deceased men, identified as Sameer Ahmad Sheikh, Danish Hameed Thokar, Ubaid Padder, and Hanzla Shah from Shopian, along with Yasir Bhat from Kulgam, were all local residents.

This operation in Kulgam follows the killing of five LeT operatives along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara on October 26. In September, security forces engaged in a week-long battle with terrorists in the forests of Garol in Anantnag. This operation resulted in the loss of two officers, a soldier, and a deputy superintendent of police. The encounter concluded on September 19 with the elimination of two terrorists, including LeT commander Uzair Khan.
