The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C) said that Sahadeb Sarkar, who served as the acting director until last week, was dismissed due to a sexual harassment case against him.
Before a permanent director could be appointed, Sarkar was required to step down from his position. Previously, regular directors such as Uttam Kumar Sarkar and Anju Seth had also resigned before their terms were completed.
The IIM announced at a media release that its internal complaints committee (ICC) had received a written complaint against the then director-in-charge, Sahadeb Sarkar, under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act).
"The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of the institute received a written complaint under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act) against the then Director-in-Charge professor Sahadeb Sarkar. After ascertaining that the complaint prima facie warrants a formal inquiry, the ICC communicated this to the Board of Governors (BoG)," stated the institute.
"On January 6, 2024, the Board of Governors at IIM-C held a special meeting, where they accepted the ICC's recommendation to not let Professor Sahadeb Sarkar continue as Director-in-Charge. They decided to remove him from the said post and any other positions where he has administrative charges at IIM Calcutta, pending an official inquiry before the ICC and any subsequent or related proceedings," it said.
