The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an FIR against Ritwick Dutta, a leading environmental lawyer, for allegedly violating the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.

The CBI initiated an action based on a complaint filed by the Union Home Office, which claimed that Dutta's organization, the Legal Initiative for Forests and the Environment (LIFE), was receiving funds from Earth Justice (EJ), a US-based organization, to legally challenge Indian coal projects with the aim of stalling them. The ministry considered this to be a violation of the FCRA regulations.
