Iranian female athlete Elnaz Rekabi was without a hijab when she entered the final of the Asian climbing competition in Seoul, South Korea. The competition was held on 16 October in Seoul.
Elnaaz was representing Iran. Hijab is also mandatory for Iranian women in sports competitions. But in Iran, people have been protesting against the hijab for the past one month.
Women are also actively participating in this demonstration. The landing of the hijab without Elnaz Rekabi is being seen as support for this protest.
A video of Elnaaz participating in climbing without a hijab is becoming increasingly viral on social media. People are linking Elnaaz's bravery to go without hijab.
BBC Persian Service correspondent Bahman Kalbasi tweeted, "Women athletes from almost all countries of the world are in sports outfits. On the other hand, Iranian female athletes are being forced to wear hibaaz for the last 43 years. This happens even when playing outside the country. However, Elnaaz bravely participated in the competition without a hijab and her video went viral.
UAE's Hasan Sajwani tweeted the video of Elnaaz, writing, "Historic! Iranian female athlete Elnaz Rekabi entered the final of the Asian climbing competition held in Seoul without a hijab. The hijab has been mandatory for female athletes since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, but Elnaz refused to accept it. Elnaaz came fourth in the final but won the hearts of millions of people around the world.
Who is Elnaz Rekabi?
Elnaz Rekabi is an Iranian sport climber. She participated in the 2021 IFSC Climbing World Championships and took the bronze medal in the women's medley event. She participated in the 2022 IFSC Asian Climbing Championships without a hijab, where she finished fourth.
