What was the agenda of special parliament session, Photo-op?

The special session of the Parliament, called without a clear agenda, turned out to be a grand spectacle. The session was marked by the Prime Minister’s speeches, photo-ops, celebrity visits, and the swift passing of a bill1.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha on the first day of the special session. His speeches covered a wide range of subjects, including the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon and the successful hosting of the 18th G20 Summit.

In a tweet, political commentator Memeghnad criticized the BJP government, calling the special session a "photo-op" and a "mockery of democracy." He listed the following events that took place during the session:

  • The PM gave four long repetitive speeches.
  • They dedicated two days to conducting photoshoots and capturing dramatic visuals of the PM.
  • Celebrities received invitations to tour the new parliament building.
  • Although it will not be implemented, they passed a bill in two days.
  • An MP from the ruling party used filthy and horrendous language while giving a speech in the new parliament.

Memeghnad concluded his tweet by saying, "Well done BJP. What a wonderful inauguration you have given to this nation."

Many people have criticized the BJP government's special parliament session, calling it a waste of time and money. The opposition parties have also accused the BJP government of using the session to promote its own agenda and to take credit for projects initiated by the previous government.

Photo-Ops and Visuals

The session featured photo opportunities and dramatic visuals with the Prime Minister and other MPs. The Prime Minister, accompanied by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Nitin Gadkari, and other parliamentarians, entered the new Lok Sabha chamber.

Celebrities also received invitations to tour the new Parliament building. Actors Kangana Ranaut, Esha Gupta, and Tamannaah Bhatia were among the host of women celebrities who visited the new Parliament building as special invitees of Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur.

The government introduced and passed the Women’s Reservation Bill, which aims to provide one-third reservation to women in Parliament and state assemblies, within two days. However, they are yet to implement it.

The session was not without controversy. A ruling party MP, Ramesh Bidhuri, used derogatory language while giving a speech in the new Parliament.
