Solar shingles are small solar panels designed to resemble and replace traditional roofing materials, such as asphalt shingles, with energy-generating alternatives. Rather than being mounted on top of the roof, like most home solar panels, solar tiles are incorporated into the roof itself, an example of building-integrated photovoltaics.
The advantage of solar tiles is mainly aesthetic. They are known to be more expensive and less efficient than standard solar panels, although they may become more practical for many people as technology improves their performance.
What Are Solar Shingles?
Solar shingles have been commercially available since 2005. They are designed by fusing solar panels with the roof rather than simply mounting them on top.
All solar shingles are designed to function as both roofing materials and energy sources, but they can achieve that dual identity in a number of ways.
Some solar tiles use silicon as a semiconductor, as do most conventional solar panels, while others are based on thin-film solar cells, which feature super-thin layers of certain photovoltaic materials, such as copper, indium, and gallium selenide (CIGS).
The thinness of these solar cells makes them lighter and more flexible, both very useful qualities. While earlier versions of thin-film flexible sunroofs had to be installed over other roofing material, newer products are rigid and strong enough to serve as shingles on their own.
How do solar shingles work?
Although these panels have changed over time, they still retain the same basic idea: fusing PV modules with the roof instead of mounting them on the roof. All BIPVs function as both a roof and a power source. They can achieve this dual purpose in several ways:
- Using silicon as a semiconductor like most solar panels. They have a rigid frame but are made thin and proportionate to the roofing materials and then installed in line with the materials.
- Use of thin film solar cells comprising thin layers of photovoltaic materials such as CIGS (copper indium gallium) or CdTe (cadmium telluride).
- Like traditional solar panels, PV shingles convert solar energy into electricity by harnessing the flow of electrons when sunlight strikes silicon, CIGS or CdTe semiconductor materials.
