Warm weather alone can't stop coronavirus from spreading: Study

Researchers said that for every degree Celsius increase in temperature, the number of people infected decreased by about 0.04.

Ground Report | New Delhi: A new study shows that the rate of coronavirus infection varies from season to season. It is true that the rate of spread of infection is lower in summer, but warm weather alone is not enough to stop this spread. The study was led by researchers from Imperial College, London. The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers point out that temperature and population density are the most important factors that determine how easily the virus will spread. The imposition of a lockdown is one of the various restrictive measures to reduce its spread.

Dr. Tom Smith of the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial College said that our results suggest that changes in temperature have little effect on the spread of the virus compared to policy interventions. So when people live without vaccinations, governments should not stop intervening. Like, imposing lockdown and getting social distancing, etc. The spread of the virus is not going to stop only due to seasonal changes ie warming weather.

Our study also suggests that as temperatures are lower during autumn and winter, the virus can spread more easily in the absence of timely policy intervention or covid behavior, the researchers said.

Due to seasonal variations, it is very difficult to predict the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Other viruses, such as the flu virus and other coronaviruses, are known to be affected by environmental factors. For example, high temperatures and low humidity reduce the spread of respiratory droplets, preventing the spread of the flu. High temperatures are also known to inactivate other coronaviruses in the air and on surfaces.

The study report said that it is difficult to make comparisons between countries to know the reasons for the spread of coronavirus infection. For example, in some countries like Brazil, India and Iran, where despite having a hot climate, the corona spreads rapidly in these countries. However, the researchers found strong evidence that SARS-CoV-2 spreads more in places with low temperatures and high population densities.

Researchers claim that by increasing the temperature by one degree Celsius, the number of infected people has decreased by about 0.04. However, interventions such as the lockdown did not reveal much about any weather effects.
