A pilgrim on horseback fell into a deep gorge near Kedarnath on Sunday after the animal lost control near Kuber Glacier.

The devotee, identified as Rishiraj Singh, was travelling with a group from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. Many pilgrims who face difficulty walking choose to ride horses or mules for the 16-kilometre uphill journey. Near Big Lincholi, one of the horses got startled and went out of control. Singh, who was riding it, slipped and fell into the trench below.

NDRF personnel promptly responded to the alert. The team successfully pulled Singh out of the gorge and provided immediate assistance.

Earlier the same day, a helicopter returning from Kedarnath to Phata crashed in the Gaurikund forest area around 5:20 am. All seven people on board died. Following the crash, the state suspended all helicopter services in the Char Dham Yatra.
