An Air India passenger flight crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport on Thursday afternoon. The flight, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport, took off at 1:38 PM and crashed just five minutes later near the airport.
Initial visuals shared on social media show plumes of thick black smoke rising from the crash site. Emergency services rushed to the area soon after the incident. The airport has been shut down until further notice, and all incoming and outgoing flights are on hold.
According to Air India, there were 242 passengers on board. The exact number of casualties or injuries is still unknown. Officials have not released a detailed statement yet. Rescue and relief work is ongoing, and authorities are assessing the situation on the ground.
Eyewitnesses near the crash site said they heard a loud noise and then saw flames and smoke. Many gathered near the area before being moved back by security personnel. Fire engines, ambulances, and airport rescue teams are currently at the site.
The reason for the crash is still unclear. Weather conditions in Ahmedabad were reported to be normal at the time of takeoff. Aviation experts say technical issues or bird hits are among possible causes, but nothing has been confirmed.
