Ground Report | New Delhi: What's the best food and worst food; Eating high amounts of red, processed meats, and animal fat increases your risk of stroke. However, consuming vegetable fat would have the opposite effect, according to research from the American Heart Association.

Our conclusions indicate that the type of fat and the different dietary sources of it are more important than the total amount in preventing cardiovascular disease, including stroke, said Fang Lei Wang, lead author of the study and investigator in the department of nutrition from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

27 years of studies

The study looked at 11,7136 participants over 27 years, with an average age of 50 years. Of the group, 63% were women and all were free of heart disease and cancer at the time of enrollment.

Every 4 years, the participants filled out questionnaires on their eating habits that were used to calculate the amount, source, and types of fats they habitually consumed.

During the study, 6,189 participants suffered strokes, including 2,967 ischemic strokes and 814 hemorrhagic strokes.

An ischemic stroke is, according to the US National Library of Medicine, a stroke caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain.

On the other hand, hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain leaks or ruptures, according to the Mayo Clinic.

  • Researchers have ranked more than 8,000 food items. A score of 100 means the healthiest food and a score of 1 means the worst food.

  • According to this ranking, vegetables, fruits, and seeds have got the highest score. Almost all raw fruits got a score of around 100. The average score for vegetables was 69.1 while that of fruits was 73.9.

  • Snacks and sweets got the lowest score. His average score was 16.4. Researchers say that those things whose score is below 30 should be eaten at least.

  • According to this research, things with a score of 31 to 69 are average and eating them in small quantities is healthy. For example, the score of starchy vegetables was estimated at 43.2. Eggs got 42.67 while sea mines got 67 marks.

  • Sodas and energy drinks were the worst beverages with an average score of 27.6, while vegetable juices got 100 points. Fruit juices averaged 67.

Meat

  • Beef scored the worst with a score of 24.9 while sea creature meat topped with a score of 67. Poultry production averaged 42.67.
