What is National Credit Framework released by UGC?

The national credit framework of UGC has enabled the students to creditise the expertise in Vedas, Puranas, and other elements of the Indian Knowledge system. 

The national credit framework NCrF on Tuesday released by the University Grants Commission has allowed the students to credit the expertise in the different components of the Indian knowledge system. 

The framework has enabled the integration of credits through school education, vocational skills, academics, and online, digital as well as blended learning. 

The NCrF launched in accordance with the New Education Policy (NEP) has advocated that there shall not be any hard separation between academic and vocational streams. 

What does the National Credit Framework provide?

• The national credit framework under UGC launched a public notice on 10 April,23. 
• Last year in October, the draft to bring the school education system under the credit system was launched. 
• Some credits are assigned to the students on the basis of their learning hours from Class 5 to the Ph.D. level. The draft assures us to cover these credits. The total learning hours per credit is 30. 
• Since every learning will be creditised then the credits can also be earned through classroom teaching, innovation labs, sports, games, performance art, physical activities, music, NCC, and many more.
• 18 major vidyas, 64 kalas, vocational and theoretical disciplines, applied sciences, and crafts mentioned in the final document can be creditised by the students.
•  The four subsidiaries of Vedas include-  Ayurveda - medicine, Dhanurveda - weaponry, Gandharveda - music, and Silpa - architecture, Purana, Nayaya, Mimansa, Dharmashastra, Vedanga, the six auxiliary sciences, phonetics, grammar, meter, astronomy, ritual, and philosophy. 

UGC chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar said the option for IKS will be offered as a part of the education system. He further added that “we are already working on integrating IKS into higher education”.

 This is one of the initiatives taken up by the government to promote the integration of IKS into the educational system. Since 2020, the IKS division is operating in the AICTE to promote interdisciplinary research on the aspects of indigenous knowledge.

Sports and games, personalized arts, master craftsmen, traditional skills, social work, and innovation are some other fields eligible for creditisation.
