Threat of severe hunger crisis in 20 countries: United Nations

Some UN agencies, political conflicts, the Corona epidemic and climate change will have devastating effects on millions of people in the coming months.

The United Nations has said in a recent report that if the international community does not take appropriate action soon, the severe hunger crisis in more than 20 countries will escalate. Leading global food organizations, the World Food Program (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAW), released a report on Tuesday, March 23.

The WFP and the FAW report that 34 million people worldwide are already severely malnourished, meaning they are on the verge of starvation.

"We are witnessing a catastrophe before our very eyes," said David Beasley, WFP's executive director. The famine caused by conflict, the shocking effects of climate change and the global epidemic of Code 19 are knocking on the doors of millions of families. ”

The worst-hit countries are Yemen, South Sudan and northern Nigeria, according to the report. The worst crisis in the world is in African countries, but now countries like Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon and Haiti are also facing the possibility of further increase in severe hunger.

According to a report by the UN Hunger Hotspot, "humanitarian action is needed to target these extremely vulnerable areas in order to save these extremely vulnerable communities."  

"Some sections of the population in these countries are already facing severe economic shortages, malnutrition and severe malnutrition," the joint report said. In such a precarious situation, a single blow could bring a significant number of people to the brink of poverty or starvation. ”

 "To save millions of people from starvation, we urgently need three things: fighting must stop, we must reach out to such vulnerable communities so that we can help them save their lives," said David Beasley.

According to these UN agencies, ongoing conflicts in many parts of the world, the global epidemic of covid 19, extreme climate change, locust crop destruction and lack of access to the most vulnerable communities are the main causes of hunger.
