In December 1994, the General Assembly of the United Nations had declared this day to be celebrated as the first International decade of the World’s Indigenous People.
The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Population is celebrated on August 9. Also known as International Tribal Day, it is observed to create awareness about indigenous people of the world and to protect their rights.
