Climate change has never been more pronounced, and it continues to grow in relevance. We need to combat climate change urgently with human intervention since it is a situation created by humans. Addressing climate change is dependent on public awareness, and public participation is key.
Recognizing the critical role that the media plays in disseminating information and shaping opinion, the Delhi-based Center for Media Studies (CMS) has embarked on an initiative aimed at strengthening the professional competence of college students. media and communication. The goal is to equip tomorrow's media leaders with a deep understanding of low-carbon sustainable development, emphasising sustainable development with minimal carbon intensity.
To actualize this effort, CMS has orchestrated a comprehensive program encompassing capacity-building workshops for media students in four prominent states of India: Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. These workshops are designed for postgraduate media students and seek to generate a deep understanding of the issues related to sustainable development and climate change.
Under the programme, four state-level training workshops will be organized in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana for postgraduate media students. The first media student training program of this program was organized on August 3 at the Amity University campus in Lucknow. Inaugurating the event, Dr. Ram Bhuj, CEO, Mobis Foundation, said, “Sustainable development requires curbing the wastage of resources.”
Taking his point further, Ms. Annu Anand, Director, CMS Advocacy said that “In such an era In a world where the impacts of climate change are massive and prioritizing sustainable development has become a necessity, the role of media professionals has become more important than ever in disseminating information accurately and responsibly on climate change and sustainable issues. The important role of media professionals cannot be denied.
Dr Sanjay M Johri, Director Amity School of Communication said that we often misunderstand climate change as if it is about change in weather but in fact, it is about change in our way of life. We must remember that we are the first generation to feel the sting of climate change, and we are certainly the last generation to do something about it now. We should take it as a commission to protect the planet and pass it on to the next generation.
Ms. Vernika Prakash, Director, Greentech Knowledge Solutions and facilitator of the workshop, said that it is the industry that is responsible for providing less carbonized alternatives to users, for example in electrical appliances or the clothes we wear.
The first day of the workshop focused on providing technical knowledge on low carbon development, urban planning and sustainable policies. The second day featured a visit to the Organic India Factory in Barabanki, showing the process of manufacturing organic and eco-friendly products. Participants gained first-hand knowledge of the collaboration between Organic India and farmers across India to produce a wide range of organic items.
Renowned climate science communication expert Mr. Nishant Saxena facilitated hands-on training in writing and reporting, illuminating the nuances of low carbon development.
A veteran of hosting climate change events for both mainstream media and media students, CMS has been at the forefront of raising awareness for seven years. This year's capacity building program is proudly supported by the Australian High Commission, New Delhi.
The show serves as a beacon of hope, nurturing a generation of media professionals who will champion climate change awareness and catalyze transformative action for a sustainable future.
