Sudha Murty, the philanthropist and wife of Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy, recently ran into a unique problem: people in the UK refuse to believe that she is the mother-in-law of their country’s first Indian Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak.
Murty, also an acclaimed author, possesses a simple appearance that can often fool people.
During a recent episode of the Indian comedy show “The Kapil Sharma Show”, Murty, 72, shared an anecdote about an immigration officer who did not believe her residential address when she wrote “10 Downing Street” on the form. According to media reports, 10 Downing Street is the official residence and office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Sudha Murty’s daughter Akshata is married to Rishi Sunak, who currently resides at 10 Downing Street.
“I once went there and they asked for my residential address. ‘Where are you going to stay in London?’ I was with my older sister and I wondered whether to write ’10 Downing Street’. My son also lives there (in the UK), but I couldn’t remember his full address. However, I finally wrote 10 Downing Street,” Murty recalled in the popular program.
The immigration officer scrutinized her in disbelief and asked, “Are you kidding me?” To which she replied, “No, I’m telling you the truth” in Hindi, saying, “Nahi, sachchi bolti hu.”
