Shaurya, a Namibian cheetah reintroduced to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, sadly passed away on Tuesday. The cause of death is currently unknown and will be determined after a post-mortem examination. This marks the tenth death among the cheetahs brought from Namibia, South Africa, in 2022.

The Director of the Lion Project released a statement saying that they observed Shaurya having coordination issues and a staggering gait around 11 am, after which they tranquilized the animal due to observed weakness.

"The Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF) and Director Lion Project reported noticing complications after Shaurya’s revival. Despite attempts at Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Shaurya did not respond and passed away around 3.17 pm."

"Today, on 16th January 2024 around 3:17 PM, the Namibian Cheetah Shaurya passed away. The tracking team observed incoordination and a staggering gait around 11 AM and consequently tranquilized the animal, discovering weakness. The team revived the animal, however post-revival complications arose and the animal did not respond to CPR. We can ascertain the cause of death after a post-mortem," said the APCCF & Director Lion Project in a statement.

10 cheetahs dead so far

So far, ten cheetahs have unfortunately passed away. Tblisi, a female cheetah known for her first hunt on World Cheetah Day (December 4, 2022), was the ninth to die, passing away in August last year.

In June 2023, two male cheetahs, Tejas and Suraj, also died.

Another female cheetah, Sasha, succumbed to kidney complications on March 27, followed by Uday, who suffered heart failure and died on April 24. A female cheetah named Daksha lost her life on May 9 during a mating conflict with a male cheetah.

Lastly, three unnamed cheetah cubs died on May 23 due to extreme heat and weakness.
