The alarming issue of school shootings, which instills fear in students, educators, parents, and communities, invariably sparks intense debates about gun control and school safety.
In 2024, this distressing yet crucial task continues. Further details about this tracking initiative and the methodology employed are available.
So far this year, there have been 2 school shootings resulting in injuries or deaths, as per an analysis by Education Week. Since 2018, the count of such incidents stands at 183. The previous year witnessed 37 school shootings with injuries or fatalities. The numbers for the years 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, and 2018 were 51, 35, 10, and 24 (for both 2019 and 2018) respectively.
On January 4th, a tragic incident occurred at Perry High School in Perry, Iowa, where a 6th-grade student lost their life and five others, including four students and a school administrator, were injured in a shooting.
The suspected 17-year-old student reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This incident has the unfortunate distinction of having the most casualties in a single event since the shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, on March 27, 2023.

2023 school shootings surpass 2022 record
In 2023, the number of school shootings in the U.S. exceeded the previous year’s record of 305 incidents, as per the K-12 School Shooting Database. The count for this year has already reached 306, marking a record high for the third year in a row.
Based on these figures, David Riedman, a school shooting expert and the founder of the database, predicts that the total number of incidents by the end of the year could fall between 360 and 400.
A leading resource in documenting school shootings, Riedman's database, records any instance where someone intentionally fires or brandishes a gun, or a bullet strikes school property, no matter the number of victims, the time or day of the incident, or the reasoning behind it.
Riedman derived his projection for the total number of shootings by the end of 2023 from trends he observed over the past 57 years and from an analysis he conducted on weekly shooting rates during the previous two academic years.
