Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a woman in Sydney. Police confirmed the international cricket star, 31, was arrested at a Sussex Street hotel at around 1 am on Sunday for the alleged incident in East Sydney last week.

Detectives from the State Crime Command's Sex Crimes Squad and the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command began a joint investigation following reports that a 29-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted at a home in Rose Bay.

The left-handed batsman played against Namibia in the ongoing T20 World Cup first-round match and was sidelined.Later, he was ruled out of the tournament due to injury, even as the team qualified for the Super 12 stage. The Lankan team finished fourth in Group 1.

The New South Wales Police, on their website, also mentioned the arrest of an unidentified Sri Lankan citizen.

Police allege that the woman had exchanged messages with Gunathilaka for days through an online dating app. The couple met on Wednesday and the professional cricketer sexually assaulted her, according to police reports.

"As part of ongoing investigations, specialist police carried out a crime scene examination at an address in Rose Bay on Saturday. Following further investigation, a 31-year-old man was arrested at a hotel on Sussex Street, Sydney, shortly before 1 a.m. today (Sunday, November 6, 2022),"

A crime scene examination was carried out at the address on Saturday. Gunathilaka was taken to the Sydney Police Station and charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent. He was denied bail to appear in Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.

Update

On 7th November, the Sri Lankan Cricket(SLC( has suspended the cricketer from all forms of cricket, with immediate effect. That basically means that, Gunathilaka won't be playing for Sri Lanka's national team until the charges are cleared or when SLC revokes the suspension.
