After a 12-day pause, the Kilauea volcano's summit eruption resumed Wednesday morning. The eruption began around 9:15 a.m. at the Halemaumau Crater, with a small lava flow coming from the north vent. Scientists observed low-level lava spattering from the north vent beginning at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday. The eruption gradually increased in intensity as the lava began to shoot up from both the south and north vents. This marks a significant escalation in the volcanic activity. By mid-afternoon, the lava fountains reached impressive heights. The north vent produced fountains that were about 200 feet tall. Experts anticipate these fountains could grow taller as more gas-rich magma makes its way to the surface, adding energy to the eruption. Photo credit: X/Screengrab/@anadoluagency

On Thursday, field crews reported that the fountains had reached heights of 90 to 100 meters (295 to 330 feet) from the north vent and 40 to 50 meters (130 to 160 feet) from the south vent. This shows the eruption's increasing intensity and provides a dramatic display for onlookers. Photo credit: X/Screengrab/@anadoluagency

The eruption has been intermittent since it started on December 23, pausing periodically. The eruption's activity has varied in length, lasting from 14 hours to 12 days, with the last pause occurring on January 6, 2025, making the resumption particularly notable.
