Heavy rains in Nagpur inundated low-lying areas and triggered measures to shift people from these water-logged areas to safer places. On Saturday, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavi stated that they had rescued 180 people, including 40 students from a school for the hearing and speech-impaired, following the heavy rains.
Fadnavis said that the National Disaster Response (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are rescuing people from flooded homes and streets. Fadnavis also stated that two Army units are reaching the Ambazari area, where a lake overflowed.
The city received torrential downpours from Friday midnight. According to the weather department, Nagpur airport reported 106 mm of rainfall till 5.30 a.m. The administration has declared a holiday for schools as a precautionary measure. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is from Nagpur, took to X to share that he is continuously monitoring the rain situation in the city.
His office on X said, "Incessant rainfall has caused the Ambazari lake to overflow. Fadnavis's office stated, "The deputy CM has instructed the Nagpur collector, municipal commissioner, and police commissioner to promptly mobilize multiple teams for rescuing people who are trapped at a few locations. The low-lying area around it notably impacts, and it also impacts other parts of the city.
Fadnavis updates rescue operations and tides
Later, Fadnavis stated on X that two units of NDRF and two units of SDRF, divided into 7 groups, rescued 140 citizens. He reported that he had rescued 40 students from a school for the hearing and speech-impaired.
The fire department is also conducting rescue operations, as stated by the deputy CM. Fadnavis also urged people not to believe in any rumors.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has advised people not to leave their homes unless necessary. Continuous rains have caused waterlogging in many city roads.
Meanwhile, Mumbai city and its suburban areas are in for a day of wet weather with weather forecasters predicting rainfall. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a weather update, indicating a generally cloudy sky with moderate rainfall throughout the day.
In a statement, the civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, said that the city is expecting a high tide today at 1638 hours, which will bring tidal waves reaching a height of 2.97 meters.
Later in the night, the water levels will recede to 1.47 meters with a low tide expected at 2330 hours.
On September 24, the city will experience another high tide at 0709 hours, with tidal waves expected to reach a height of 3.35 meters. A subsequent low tide is anticipated at 1332 hours on the same day, and water levels are projected to be at 2.46 meters.
