IMD warns of heavy rain, snow, and wind in western Himalayas

India is currently experiencing a variety of weather conditions, with rain and snowfall expected in the mountains due to a western disturbance. However, many parts of the country, particularly in North and Northeast India, do not expect relief from fog.

According to the Meteorological Department, various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

The weather scenario extends beyond the lack of snow. Dense fog has been disrupting visibility in various parts of the country. From Patiala to Varanasi, Gaya to Vijayawada, we have recorded low visibility, which is impacting daily life.

Similar conditions of dense to very dense fog during the night and morning in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar over the next few days.

Yesterday, fog significantly reduced visibility in different parts of the country. For instance, they recorded visibility at 25 meters in Patiala, Punjab, and at 200 meters in Amritsar. In Delhi, they recorded visibility at 500 meters in both Safdarjung and Palam.

"The weather forecast predicts severe conditions for today, January 16, in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh due to the cold. They also expect the chill to continue tomorrow, January 17, in these states. They have advised people in these areas to avoid the severe cold wave."

Forecasters predict that a fresh western disturbance will become active from tonight, January 16, leading to a change in the weather patterns of the western Himalayan areas. They expect light rain in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and different parts of Uttarakhand on January 17 and 18, along with snowfall in higher reaches.
