Rain, fog, and temperature changes hit parts of India this week

A western disturbance triggers rain and thunderstorms in northern India. Cyclonic circulation brings heavy rainfall to southern regions. Dense fog affects parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Temperature fluctuations observed across regions

The western disturbance remains active as a trough of westerly winds at mid-levels, leading to weather changes across northern states. The Meteorological Department predicted light rain and thundershowers in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and isolated areas of North Punjab today.

A cyclonic circulation persists over the Gulf of Mannar and the Sri Lanka coast. Light to moderate rains with thunderstorms are forecasted in Southern Peninsular India, particularly on November 16 and 17. Kerala and Mahe are expected to receive heavy rainfall today, with some areas possibly recording up to 7 cm (70 mm) of rain.

The Meteorological Department has warned of dense fog in parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Bihar until the night of November 17. Foggy conditions are expected in western Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim during early mornings from November 17 to 19.

Severe visibility drops were reported in multiple regions. Key affected areas included:

  • Punjab: Zero visibility in Amritsar, Patiala, Ludhiana, Halwara, Adampur, and Bathinda.

  • Haryana: Zero visibility in Ambala and Sirsa, 500 meters in Hisar.

  • Rajasthan: Zero visibility in Ganganagar, 500 meters in Suratgarh.

  • Uttar Pradesh: Zero visibility in Sarsawa and Gorakhpur, 500 meters in Agra, 200 meters in Lucknow.

No significant changes in minimum temperatures were recorded nationwide. However, higher-than-normal minimum temperatures were observed in northwestern Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, South Telangana, Central Maharashtra, and West Uttar Pradesh, with readings 3-5°C above average.

In contrast, Madhya Pradesh and North Chhattisgarh recorded minimum temperatures 2-3°C below normal. The Meteorological Department forecasts a gradual decrease in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C in northwest, central, and east India over the next few days.

Delhi’s sky is expected to remain clear today. Morning mist and moderate fog are likely, with northwest winds picking up to 12 km/h in the afternoon. Light fog may occur in the evening and night as winds drop below 10 km/h.

Currently, Delhi’s maximum temperature ranges between 28-30°C, and the minimum is between 11-17°C, slightly above normal in several areas.

On November 15, rain and thunderstorms were reported in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Madhya Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Mahe.
