The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and Hauz Khas administration inspected 23 pubs and found that 11 of them violated noise pollution norms. The DPCC imposed an environmental compensation (EC) of Rs 10,000 on these pubs, and closed three of them. The other two pubs were fined ₹7.5 lakh each, and one restaurant was fined ₹15 lakh.
Noise Pollution in Hauz Khas
On April 6, 2024, closure directions were issued by the DPCC to three establishments in Hauz Khas Village for violating the Water Act, 1974, and the Air Act, 1981. These units were found to be operating without the necessary pollution control systems and lacked the required consent to operate. The crackdown came as a response to earlier inspections conducted by a joint committee that uncovered the violations.
Further exacerbating the issue, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) received complaints regarding live music events being held on open rooftops using loudspeakers and other sound equipment. This prompted the authorities to take decisive action to address the noise pollution plaguing the area.
SDM fined 10 units
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) also issued challans amounting to Rs. 10,000 each to 10 units for violation of the Noise Rules, 2000. However, it was found that environmental compensation had only been received from seven out of the ten units. Additionally, discrepancies were discovered in the transaction numbers of the payment receipts of three units.
A comprehensive list of eateries and establishments operating in the area was submitted by the DPCC, highlighting those in violation of environmental norms. Joint inspections by the SDM, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and DPCC revealed that several units were non-compliant, leading to further action being taken.
Of particular concern were the units found to be operating without requisite pollution control systems, resulting in their closure by the authorities. These establishments were also directed to deposit environmental compensation within a stipulated timeframe, which has yet to be fulfilled.
In response to the ongoing environmental degradation, the DPCC and relevant authorities continue to monitor and enforce regulations to ensure the sustainability and well-being of Hauz Khas Village and its surrounding areas.
Residents and environmental activists have welcomed the crackdown on noise pollution, emphasizing the importance of preserving the ecological balance and quality of life in urban areas. As efforts to combat environmental violations persist, the hope is to foster a more environmentally conscious and sustainable community in Hauz Khas Village.
