the National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued directives to the chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to investigate allegations of illegal brick kilns operating in Mathura district. The NGT's order came in response to concerns raised by an applicant regarding the adverse environmental impact caused by these brick kilns.
According to the applicant's counsel, the brick kilns in question are operating in densely populated areas between the National Capital Region (NCR) and the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ). They are reported to be using hazardous waste such as spent organic material, solvents, oily residue, pet coke, filter press cake, plastic rubber, and leather waste as fuel, significantly affecting the ambient air quality.
Despite previous closure orders issued against some of these brick kilns, they continue to operate unlawfully without obtaining Consent to Operate (CTO) and without adhering to environmental norms. The counsel referred to a list of defaulters to support these claims.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the NGT directed the Chairman of UPPCB to thoroughly investigate the allegations and verify if the brick kilns are indeed operating illegally, in violation of environmental norms and closure orders. The Chairman is instructed to take appropriate action against the offenders and submit a detailed report to the NGT one week prior to the next hearing scheduled for August 20, 2024.
