The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued directives to the Member Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to address complaints concerning illegal sand mining along the Kanhar and Maliya rivers in Sonbhadra.
The court mandated that if illegal mining activities are confirmed, the UPPCB must assess the environmental damage and impose appropriate environmental compensation on the offenders. Additionally, the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has been instructed to furnish a report detailing the actions taken.
The case was initiated suo motu by the tribunal following a report published on February 27, 2024, which highlighted illegal sand mining in Sonbhadra district.
The report mentioned the interception of a tractor transporting illegally mined sand from the Kanhar River near Deodhi Gram Panchayat, situated at the foothills of Jatajua hills.
Residents reported disturbances caused by the noise of tractors operating along the riverbank late at night, indicating ongoing illegal mining activities.
In response to the case, the District Magistrate of Sonbhadra submitted a report containing the findings of a committee comprising the Tehsildar of Duddhi, Mining Inspector of Sonbhadra, Mining Surveyor, and Regional Accountant. While the report acknowledged the presence of small pits along the riverbanks, it indicated no recent signs of mining activity.
