Follow our live coverage of the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25 Awards ceremony being held today at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu is presenting the awards, with 78 winners recognised across four categories.

This year’s survey theme is clear: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. It highlights how cities manage waste, keep public spaces clean, and involve citizens in daily sanitation efforts. The event is organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and attended by Union Minister Manohar Lal and Minister of State Tokhan Sahu.

Eight cities from Madhya Pradesh are among the awardees. Indore, Ujjain, and Budhni are recognised in the newly introduced Super Swachh League, which rewards cities that show consistent top-tier performance. Bhopal, Dewas, and Shahganj receive the President’s Award, while Jabalpur and Gwalior are honoured in special and state-level categories.

Bhopal secures the second spot in the national cleanliness rankings. The event also features the announcement of star ratings for Garbage-Free Cities, ODF++, and Water+ certifications.

Swachh Survekshan, now in its ninth year, has become the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey. More than 3,000 assessors visited over 4,500 urban local bodies, reviewing data and verifying results on the ground. Public participation also hit record highs, with nearly two crore citizens contributing feedback.

Cleanest Cities Of India. Check List Of Winners
Indore has been declared the cleanest city in India for the eighth year in a row. Surat secured second place, while Navi Mumbai stood third in the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards on Thursday in New Delhi. In the 3–10 lakh population category, Noida ranked first, followed by Chandigarh and Mysore.

Indore has secured the top position in the Super Clean City League among cities with a population of over 10 lakh. Urban Administration Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya and Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava received the award from President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. Ujjain was awarded in the 3–10 lakh population category, while Budhni received the award in the under-20,000 population category. Cities that ranked in the top three between 2021 and 2023 were considered for this elite Super Clean League.

What Is The History of Swachh Survekshan
Swachh Survekshan began in 2016 with just 73 cities. At the time, the focus was on pushing cities to end open defecation and improve solid waste systems. Only one lakh people participated in that survey.
In 2017, the number of participating cities jumped to 434. Then, in 2018, more than 4,200 cities joined. The top cities that year were Indore, Bhopal, and Chandigarh.
Indore has since become a constant leader. In 2019, the survey had over 64 lakh citizen responses. Ambikapur and Mysuru followed Indore in the rankings. That year, the process went fully digital and began including third-party certifications.
In 2020, over 4,200 cities were again covered. Indore remained at the top, followed by Surat and Navi Mumbai. Varanasi was rated the cleanest Ganga town. Continuous assessment was introduced for the first time.
By 2021, participation crossed 5 crore citizens. Indore stayed number one. Surat and Vijayawada followed. The Swachh Survekshan introduced recognition categories like Aarohi and Divya to mark different levels of city achievement.
Each year, the survey evolved. It added new indicators, updated scoring systems, and encouraged cities to think long-term about hygiene and waste.
