Current Weather Systems

  1. Low-Pressure Area:
    • A well-marked low-pressure area is currently situated over the east-central Arabian Sea. Over the next few days, this system is anticipated to move west-northwestward away from the Indian coast.
  2. Cyclonic Circulation:
    • A cyclonic circulation is present over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, extending up to mid-tropospheric levels. This circulation is likely to lead to the formation of another low-pressure area around October 21, which may intensify into a depression by October 23.

Expected Rainfall

The IMD forecasts isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in several regions:

  • Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra & Kutch, Gujarat Region: Isolated heavy rainfall is likely on October 19 and 20.
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands: Heavy rainfall is expected on October 20 and 21.
  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal: Isolated, very heavy rainfall is anticipated on October 19.

Fishermen Advisory

Fishermen are advised to exercise caution due to squally weather conditions:

  • Arabian Sea: Wind speeds of 35 kmph to 45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph, are expected. Fishermen should refrain from venturing into these waters on October 19 and 20.
  • Bay of Bengal: Similar wind conditions are forecasted for the Andaman Sea and central Bay of Bengal from October 21 to 24. Fishermen are advised to avoid these areas during this period.

Impact and Precautions

The IMD warns of several potential impacts due to the expected heavy rainfall:

  • Localized Flooding: Roads may experience waterlogging, particularly in urban areas, leading to traffic disruptions.
  • Visibility Issues: Heavy rainfall may cause occasional reductions in visibility.
  • Damage to Infrastructure: Minor damage to unmetalled roads and vulnerable structures is possible.
  • Agricultural Impact: Standing crops may suffer damage due to inundation and wind.

Action Suggested

Residents in affected areas are encouraged to take the following precautions:

  • Regulate Surface Transport: Monitor traffic conditions and avoid routes prone to waterlogging.
  • Stay Informed: Follow local advisories and updates from the IMD.
  • Avoid Vulnerable Areas: Steer clear of regions that frequently experience flooding.

As the weather situation develops, the IMD will continue to monitor and provide updates to ensure public safety. Residents are urged to stay alert and prepared for the anticipated rainfall and its associated impacts. For more detailed district-wise warnings and updates, please refer to the IMD's official website.
