The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the development of a cyclonic storm named "Biparjoy" over the central-eastern and southeastern Arabian Sea. The system initially formed as a trough at 8:30 AM., then intensified to a deep depression at 11:30 a.m. and further strengthened into a cyclonic storm by 5:30 p.m. of the same day.

Over the past six hours, the deep depression has moved in a northerly direction at a speed of 4 kilometres per hour (kmph) over the southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea. The IMD predicts that the cyclonic storm will further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours.

According to IMD data, the cyclonic storm is expected to reach very severe cyclonic storm status on June 8, with winds between 115 and 125 km/h and gusts up to 140 km/h. Severe cyclonic storm conditions are anticipated to persist through June 11, with estimated wind speeds of 135-145 kmph and gusts up to 160 kmph.

IMD issued warning to fishermen

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning to fishermen, advising them not to venture into specific regions during certain dates. These include the southeastern and central and southwestern contiguous Arabian Sea on June 6, the central-eastern and contiguous areas of the central-western and southern Arabian Sea on June 7-9, and the central-eastern and contiguous areas of the west-central Arabian Sea Tue June 10.

Earlier on Monday, the IMD had mentioned that the formation and intensification of a low pressure system over the southeastern Arabian Sea would have a significant impact on the advance of the monsoon towards the coast of Kerala.

The private forecasting agency, Skymet Weather, has suggested that the start of the monsoon over Kerala may occur on June 8 or 9, but it is anticipated to be a relatively weak and moderate start. They explained that these powerful weather systems in the Arabian Sea hinder the advance of the monsoon inland. While the monsoon can reach coastal areas, it will find it difficult to penetrate beyond the Western Ghats.

How did Cyclone Biparjoy get its name?

The name "Biparjoy" was given by Bangladesh and means "calamity" or "disaster". It was adopted by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and its member countries in 2020. The naming of cyclones in the North Indian Ocean, including the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, follows regional standards.

In this region, cyclones are named alphabetically by country and use gender-neutral names, according to WMO and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission (ESCAP).

Some of possible impacts of Cyclone Biparjoy

  • Heavy rainfall
  • Strong winds
  • Storm surge
  • Flooding
  • Landslides

Climate change link

Sea surface temperatures in the Arabian This is above the climatological mean. This is clearly the climate change link, as Arabian Sea warming is favouring more intense cyclones,” Climate Scientist and IPCC Lead Author Roxy Mathew Koll wrote on Twitter.

Furthermore, Koll explained on Twitter that The long-term Indian Ocean warming and the developing El Niño — both has the potential to weaken the monsoon. Are we having frequent delayed onsets? We don't know yet, which occur throughout the tropical Pacific.
