On Sunday, a 22-year-old woman tragically drowned when the car she was travelling in with her family was stranded in deep water at the KR Circle underpass. This incident occurred near Vidhana Soudha, the main government building in Karnataka.
While fire and emergency services personnel and brave bystanders managed to save five family members and the driver, one person, identified as Bhanurekha, lost her life. Bhanurekha, a 22-year-old software engineer who worked at Infosys, was pronounced dead on arrival at St Martha's Hospital.
Upon learning of the incident, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah quickly visited the hospital to assess the situation. He expressed his condolences and announced a compensation of ₹5 lakhs for the relatives of the deceased, as well as free treatment for those injured and admitted to the hospital.
Siddaramaiah addressed the journalists and said that due to heavy rain, the barricade at the underpass had fallen and despite the risk, the driver attempted to cross the underpass. The Chief Minister expressed concern when reporters mentioned that doctors had refused to treat Bhanurekha when she arrived at the hospital, despite the fact that she was alive at the time. He would assure them that he would look into the matter and take appropriate action.
Eyewitness information that the driver of the car tried to navigate through the water, but the vehicle began to dive in the middle of the underpass. The occupants managed to escape and sought help as the water level continued to rise. People nearby responded by throwing saris and ropes to help stabilize a fleet.
Despite their efforts, Bhanurekha and others struggled to get out of the water. While some were rescued by emergency services personnel and swimmers, others were carried to safety using a ladder.
The survivors were rushed to the hospital, where the heartbreaking scene of Bhanurekha's lifeless body caused immense pain among his family members.
