Ground Report | New Delhi: Jharkhand judge murder case; The Supreme Court on Friday took cognizance of the alleged murder of Dhanbad Additional District Judge (ADJ) Uttam Anand by an auto-rickshaw and sought a status report of the investigation from the Jharkhand government through the Chief Secretary and DGP within a week.

Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and Justice Surya Kant said the matter has been widely reported by the media and was also brought to the notice of this court by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
SCBA President and senior advocate Vikas Singh had on Thursday urged the court to take suo motu cognizance of the alleged murder of Anand. The Bench considered several cases in different parts of the country where judicial officers along with lawyers appearing in cases have been attacked.

The bench said, "It is the duty of the state to protect the judicial officers and the legal fraternity who act fearlessly. For this, these larger issues may need to be heard. We thought of taking suo motu cognizance of such matters."
Benz recorded in his order that there have recently been several cases of attacks on judicial officers and lawyers inside and outside the court premises, and the steps taken by the government for the protection of law officers and the nature of the incidents need to be known.

The Bench stressed that the larger issues of security of judicial officers in the country needed to be addressed. ADJ Anand is said to have been looking into the cases related to gangsters when he was hit by an auto-rickshaw during a morning walk on Wednesday. Anand died during treatment in the hospital. The CCTV footage indicated that a stolen auto-rickshaw hit him intentionally last night. The wife of the deceased judge has filed a murder case against unknown people.
Family demands CBI probe
The people of the Hazaribagh family of Judge Uttam Anand are talking about murder. The family of the judge, residing in Shivpuri locality under Lohsinghana police station area of Hazaribagh district, is calling this case a planned murder. Along with this, the CBI is demanding a probe in this matter.
The deceased’s younger brother Shambhu Suman said that his brother’s murder was done in a planned manner, which is clearly visible in the CCTV footage. He has demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter from Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The deceased judge’s father Sadanand Prasad and brother Shambhu Suman are lawyers in Hazaribagh.
The autorickshaw driver and his accomplice who hit Judge Uttam Anand have been arrested. The police had registered a case against the unknown tempo driver. The case was registered on the complaint of the Registrar of Civil Court.
The state government has also sought a reply from the DM in this matter. On July 28, a high-level meeting was held at the residential office of the SSP. Along with this, a medical board was also formed. On July 29, the Jharkhand High Court itself took cognizance and directed for a speedy investigation in the matter. The court will monitor this investigation daily. The police have been told that if the investigation is not satisfactory, the case will be handed over to the CBI.
