The family of imprisoned separatist Altaf Ahmad Shah has urgently appealed to the government to release him on bail, saying he is not receiving adequate medical care despite being diagnosed with cancer.

"My imprisoned father has been diagnosed with acute kidney cancer, which has metastasized to other parts of his body, including his bones," tweeted Shah's daughter, Ruwa Shah, while tagging the Prime Minister's office.

One request from our entire family, please allow us to meet him and grant him bail on health grounds.” Ruwa also tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in his tweets of the day

“As per the tweets of his daughter Ms Ruwa Shah, he has been diagnosed with renal cancer that had metastasized and spread to other parts of his body, including his bones, requiring immediate medical attention,” a statement issued by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq led Hurriyat said. It has appealed the Government of India to ensure that Shah is granted immediate bail on humanitarian grounds.

It is gradually getting worse. Currently, he is being kept alive with oxygen. But, there is no oncology department in the ICU of RML hospital where he is undergoing treatment."

Ruwa said he has made several earnest appeals to the Home Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office through social media in the hope of some relief.

“My incarcerated father has been diagnosed with acute kidney cancer that has metastasized and spread to other parts of the body, including the bones. It is the request of my entire family to allow us to see him and consider his request for bail for health reasons,” Ruwa wrote on Twitter. He also shared a copy of the letter he sent to the Home Secretary, appealing to his office to consider his health an emergency.

“Altaf Shah's continued imprisonment is inhumane as he is seriously ill. Request @HMOIndia to release him on humanitarian grounds so that he can be with his family in such distressing times,” Mehbooba Mufti of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) tweeted.

Shah said his father had complained of his deteriorating health to his brother Anees-ul-Islam when he visited Tihar on September 20. "But my father was transferred to RML 2-3 days after my brother's visit," said Shah, who had also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 22 noting his father's deteriorating health.
