The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory for North India. Over the next five days, the region is expected to face challenging weather conditions. Dense to very dense fog is likely to continue, along with cold to severe cold day conditions. Additionally, light rainfall or snowfall is expected in the Western Himalayan Region from January 25th to 30th, 2024.
North India experiencing below-normal temperatures
The minimum temperatures are currently ranging between 3-6°C over most parts of Punjab, in isolated pockets of north Haryana, northwest Uttar Pradesh, and between 7-10°C over many parts of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, and Bihar. These temperatures are below normal by 2-4°C over many parts of Punjab, north Haryana, some parts of Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, and in isolated pockets of Rajasthan and Bihar.
Observers have noted dense to very dense fog conditions over most parts of Punjab, many parts of Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, and in isolated pockets of West Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam & Meghalaya, and Tripura. They have also observed cold wave conditions in many parts of Punjab and in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana.
Light rainfall and snowfall expected
Under the influence of two feeble Western Disturbances, light isolated rainfall or snowfall is likely over the Western Himalayan Region from January 25th to 30th, 2024. Due to anti-cyclonic circulation over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and cyclonic circulation over east Vidarbha & neighbourhood and a trough running from South Interior Karnataka to interior Odisha in the lower levels, light rainfall at isolated to scattered places is likely over Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal & Sikkim, and northeast India during the next two days.
Isolated hailstorm is likely over Sikkim today. Light to moderate rainfall at many places is likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands from January 24th to 28th.
Dense to very dense fog conditions are very likely to prevail for a few hours in the night/morning over some/many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh from the night of January 24th to the morning of January 28th. Dense fog conditions are very likely in isolated places over Delhi on the morning of January 25th.
Cold Day to Severe Cold Day conditions are very likely to continue in many parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh on January 24th, in some parts on January 25th & 26th, and cold day conditions in isolated pockets on January 27th & 28th, 2024. Likely continued severe cold conditions in West Rajasthan and parts of Bihar for January 24-25, 2024, intermittently okay for Bihar for the next three days.
