The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rain and snowfall in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Sikkim on February 5. In Jammu and Kashmir, authorities have issued avalanche warnings for hilly areas, advising residents to limit their movement for the next 24 hours. The weather in Kashmir is expected to improve from Tuesday onwards.
Rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is expected in these states. Snowfall was reported in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir yesterday, with Auli in Chamoli experiencing its first snowfall of the season. Snowfall continues in Badrinath, and Uttarakhand, and snow cover is visible in Rudraprayag and Tehri.
On February 4, heavy rain and snowfall are expected in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh. The Meteorological Department has also predicted the possibility of hailstorms in many northern states on February 3 and 4.
In the plains, light to moderate weather is expected in Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and some areas of Uttar Pradesh on February 5. Rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is expected in these areas. In North-East India, light to moderate rain and snowfall are expected in parts of Arunachal Pradesh from February 3 to 6, with heavy rain expected in parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura on February 3.
Regarding temperature fluctuations, the minimum temperature in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, the plains of Uttarakhand, and many parts of Western Uttar Pradesh was between seven to 10 degrees Celsius yesterday. In contrast, the minimum temperature in some parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and many parts of West Bengal was between 11 to 15 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in the northern parts of the country remained above normal.
The Meteorological Department does not predict any major change in the minimum temperatures in North-West and Central India over the next five days. However, the minimum temperature in many parts of Eastern India may drop by two to four degrees Celsius in the next 24 hours, with no significant change expected afterwards.
Yesterday, Amritsar in Punjab recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius, while a maximum temperature of 36.5 degrees Celsius was recorded in Parmathi, Tamil Nadu.
