How Sourav Ganguly conspired against Kohli? Chetan Sharma reveals

Chetan Sharma, Chairman of the All India Senior Selection Committee, has made some serious revelations involving two of the best Indian captains. Notably, Virat Kohli stepping down as the team's captaincy in 2021 followed by a speculated dispute with then-BCCI Chairman Sourav Ganguly, was one of the most discussed events in the Indian cricket ecosystem.

Sourav Ganguly conspired against Kohli

In a sting operation carried out by Zee Media, BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma claimed that ego issues between former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and former Indian captain Virat Kohli were the main reason why Kohli lost the ODI captaincy.

Sharma noted that it became an ego issue between Kohli and Ganguly, which later turned into BCCI vs Kohli.

“Any dispute between the player and the BCCI president is dangerous as it becomes players against BCCI. Out of this, whoever is wrong is judged later, but it becomes a direct attack on BCCI. All players are warned that damage will only affect players.

Virat Kohli felt that he lost the captaincy because of the BCCI president. There were 9 people in the video conference of the selection committee, Ganguly may have told him "think about it once". I think Kohli didn't hear him, there were 9 others there including me and all the other selectors, BCCI officials; Kohli may not have heard it,” Chetan Sharma revealed in a Zee media sting.

Sourav Ganguly role in Virat Kohli losing captaincy

Chetan Sharma then said that Kohli believed that he was bigger than the game and the pressure should be on the team, but he became their captain.

“The PC before he went to South Africa is about the team, but I don't know why he bought the captaincy thing, maybe Kohli did it on purpose. The truth is that Kohli was lying, Ganguly told him to think about it. Why Kohli lied, no one knows until now. It became controversial, it was Board vs. Player.

Why he lied, maybe he felt that Sourav Ganguly played a big role in Virat Kohli losing the cue ball captaincy,” Chetan Sharma added.

"Removing someone from the captaincy is the job of the selectors. We removed him because we wanted to have a cue ball captain. This is normal procedure and even he (Kohli) knows it. After Virat announced that he would give up the T20I captaincy, the selectors also decided to remove him from the ODI captaincy," said Sharma.

"The Board and selectors sit down with the captain before removing him from the job. Virat knows this and that is why he felt Ganguly had a big role in his removal from the ODI captaincy. But the selectors' thinking was different. We wanted to separate captains for the red ball and white ball formats," added the head coach.

BCCI unhappy with Chetan Sharma

According to the Cricketaddictor report, the BCCI, including Chairman of the Board Roger Binny and Secretary Jay Shah, are extremely unhappy and saddened with the covert operation and official action against Sharma is written on the walls."

After the explosive sting operation, it has come to light that the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to sack him as the national chief selector.
