India provides 100 days of guaranteed employment to unskilled workers through the MNREGA scheme (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005). It is a major source of income for poor families in India.
According to the statistics for the year 2022-23 in India, there are a total of 27.57 crore laborers in MNREGA. It has 14.96 crore active workers. Job cards have been allotted to 15.35 crore people. About 5.98 crore families are linked to MNREGA.
The scheme was launched in 1991 by the Narasimha Rao government. But the daily wage received under this is still very less. The average daily wage received under this is Rs.217.
