Heavy rainfall alert for Uttarakhand, Dehradun temple flooded

Amid rainfall in Uttarakhand, two people lost their lives due to fresh landslides in Gaurikund on Wednesday. This marks the second landslide in Gaurikund in five days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Uttarakhand, forecasting heavy rain in the coming days.

The event occurred barely half a kilometer from the site where a landslide claimed three lives and left 20 missing on August 4.

Monsoon rains have been prevailing and increasing in several states, while others are experiencing clear skies and sunny conditions. The IMD is forecasting substantial rains in northwestern India over the next few days, particularly in Uttarakhand, Bihar and Jharkhand.

Regarding Uttarakhand, the IMD has warned of torrential downpours until the weekend. An orange alert has been issued for Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag and Tehri. Furthermore, Champawat, Dehradun, Pauri and Nainital are expected to experience heavy rain on 9 August.

The continuous rains have not only disrupted lives but also caused damage to infrastructure. Roads have been blocked, leaving numerous vehicles stranded for hours. Severe landslides have been reported in Kotdwara, including the Siddhbali Temple which is heavily waterlogged due to monsoon flooding.

Haldawani has also been severely affected by the rains, prompting the Branch Magistrate to assess the situation and secure essential supplies for local residents.

On Tuesday, the disaster management teams of different districts were met by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in a virtual meeting regarding the worrisome situation. Dhami gave directions to officials and local administrators to immediately commence road repair work and provide heli services to pregnant women in disaster-affected areas.

The sub-divisional magistrate informs that they have rescued 150 people in Haldwani, including several areas of Uttarakhand, where a flood-like situation persists. He states that state authorities are currently providing assistance to those in need and also making arrangements for food.
