COVID's true death toll: millions more than official counts

Ground Report | New Delhi: Half of total COVID deaths; The latest government data is proof of what terrible conditions India went through in April and May 2021. In response to an RTI, the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) said that half of the total COVID-19 related deaths in India since April 2020 occurred in just 2 months, April and May 2021.

In response to an RTI filed by a Hindustan Times reporter, NCDC said that out of the total 3,29,065 Covid deaths between April 2020 and May 2021, 1,66,632 deaths occurred in April and May 2021. In this, where 1,20,770 people died of Covid in May, 45,882 people died in April. In this way, these 2 months are the months with the highest number of Covid deaths since April 2020.

Prior to April-May 2021, the highest number of Covid deaths in a month was in September 2020, when 33,035 people lost their lives due to this. The time of September-October 2020 was the peak of the first wave of Covid. Later, in the first wave of Covid, the death toll was reduced to 2,777 in February 2021.

According to the data given by the NCDC, after the results of the assembly elections on May 2, there was a 5-fold increase in Covid deaths in the electoral states.

  • In April 2021, where 921 people died of Covid in West Bengal, 4,162 people died in May.
  • In April 2021, where 177 people died due to Covid in Assam, in May 2019 people died.
  • In Tamil Nadu in April 2021, where 1,233 people died due to Covid, 9,821 people died in May.
  • In April 2021, where 653 people died due to Covid in Kerala, it is 3,382 people in May.

The data shared by NCDC provides information on the impact of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in various states. However, a high population state like Uttar Pradesh has surprisingly low figures of Covid deaths compared to neighboring states, which raises questions about its veracity.

UP reported 20,346 Covid deaths between April 2020 and May 2021. Out of this, 8,108 Covid deaths were recorded in May 2021 and 3,438 in April 2021. On the other hand, the neighboring state of Uttarakhand, with a population equal to about one-tenth of the population of UP, reported 3,899 deaths from Covid in May 2021, i.e. 48% of the deaths in UP in the same month.

Similarly, Haryana, a state with a population equal to one-eighth of the population of UP, also reported 4,103 Covid deaths in May 2021, i.e. more than 50% of the deaths in UP in the same month.

Madhya Pradesh also officially reported 2,500 and 2,020 deaths from Covid in May and July respectively. However, according to media reports, there was a big difference between the official Covid death figures and the number of death certificates issued during April and May in UP and Madhya Pradesh.
