Gwalior: Bullet injures an 11-year old girl, matter under investigation

An 11-year-old girl named Aliya was injured on 8th June, at around 11:30 pm at night, while she was sleeping with her parents in the courtyard of her house. This incident took place in Bahodapur, a locality in Gwalior. The parents, sleeping beside the girl, heard her suddenly screaming. When they approached her, they found her legs injured and bleeding. 

After taking her to the hospital immediately, the doctor informed them that the injury was caused due to a bullet. Hence, the same was informed to the police and to the CSP of Gwalior, Sandeep Malviya. Based on the information provided, the police suspect that the bullet was fired in the open air. 

According to a social media page, the police had inspected the marriage gardens in the nearby vicinity. But, the investigation didn't result in any essential information as they did not find any event happening there. The incident is still under investigation as the police have not yet found any clues as to who could be behind this.

Firearms, and Legality in Madhya Pradesh

The legality of owning a gun in India is not easy According to, the Arms Act, of 1959, and the Arms Rules, of 1962, there are certain requirements to own a license for firearms. The criteria mention that the individual should be 21 years or above and should be of sound mind. The individual should not have any criminal records as well. The reasons for getting a license should be for, self-defence, general security, sports shooting, or for crop protection.  

According to a TOI report in 2019, Gwalior has the maximum number of licensed firearms. Although, the illegal number could be higher. The licenses are allotted to the Unique Identification Number (UIN), to maintain a database. The Union Ministry made it mandatory to provide a UIN to the guns in the states in 2018. Any firearm without a UIN is deemed to be illegal even if the owner has a valid license.
The police busted illegal firearms units in Berwani District in January 2023. Further, another from a car in Indore’s Nau area, in November 2022. The use of illegal guns had been on the rise, posing a threat to law and order, i.e. public safety.
