India's Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully launched the Chandrayaan 3 mission on Friday afternoon at precisely 2:35 pm. The spacecraft was propelled into space using the powerful LVM3-M4 rocket, which was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Center located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

ISRO Chief Somnath announced that 'Chandrayaan has embarked on its journey to the Moon and is set to touchdown on August 23rd at 5.47 am.'

10 key aspects of India's Chandrayaan mission

  • If India's mission succeeds, it will make India the fourth country, following America, Russia, and China, to achieve a lunar landing.
  • The Chandrayaan 3 budget is 615 crores, slightly exceeding the 603 crores allocated for the previous Chandrayaan 2 mission.
  • "It will be the first lunar mission to land on the south pole of the moon, providing an unprecedented opportunity to study the southern side of the moon."
  • The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is composed of a lander, a rover, and a propulsion module.
  • "The lander and rover are scheduled to touch down on the Moon's South Pole where they will engage in a series of experiments for a duration of 14 days."
  • The propulsion module will stay in the Moon's orbit to study Earth's radiation.
  • ISRO will study the soil of the moon through the mission.

India's previous moon missions

The Chandrayaan 1 mission was launched on 22 October 2008 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center. It lost communication on 29 November 2009. It detected the presence of water on the Moon.

The Chandrayaan 2 mission, launched on July 22, 2019, from the Satish Dhawan Space Center, aimed to send an orbiter, lander, and rover to the moon. After reaching the Moon's orbit on August 20, 2019, the mission encountered an unfortunate setback when the Moon Lander Vikram, alongside Rover Pragyan, crashed during their landing attempt at 2.30 am on September 7, 2019.

What would India gain by landing on the Moon?

With this, India will tell the world that it has the technology of soft landing on the moon. This will increase the world's trust in India.
