Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament A Raja's speech in which he said that Manusmriti denied Shudras equality, education, employment and entry to the temples has fueled a major dispute with the BJP accusing it of spouting hate on Tamil Nadu.

A Raja, the deputy general secretary of the DMK defended his provocative remarks against the Hindu community and refused to apologize for hurting Hindu feelings. “I am ready to apologize. But why should I apologize? We are not enemies of Hindus,” A Raja said on September 21.

The DMK MP refused to apologize for his provocative statement against the Hindu community, claiming that Hindus themselves were enemies of Hindus.

According to The News Minute, Raja claimed that it was Dravida Kazhagam and DMK who fought for the reservation of the 60% of people from the backward class who are Hindus. “We ask for the reservation of all Hindu caste people who belong to the backward class. But other upper-class Hindus, including Brahmins and Rajputs, objected. We are not enemies of the Hindus. But the Hindus themselves are,” he hinted.

A Raja at an event on Monday said: “You are a shudra until you remain a Hindu. You are the son of a prostitute until you remain a shudra. You are a Panchaman (Dalit) until you remain a Hindu. You are untouchable until you remain a Hindu. How many of you want to remain children of prostitutes? How many of you want to remain untouchable? Only if we express these questions will it become elementary to break Sanathana (Sanatana Dharma).”

In a video, Raja says that one remains a "Shudra" until one remains a Hindu. (According to Manusmrithi), a Shudra is the son of a prostitute and is a Panchaman (Dalit) until one remains a Hindu. Untouchable until be a Hindu. How many of you want to remain sons of prostitutes? How many of you want to remain untouchable? asked Raja.

BJP filed complaint

On Tuesday, the head of the state IT cell of the BJP, CTR Nirmal Kumar, also filed a complaint against Raja for his "anti-Hindu" comments, while the DMK leader was supported by Naam Tamizhar Katchi chief Seeman.
