Altaf of Kasganj Killed in police custody or did suicide?

Ground Report | New Delhi: Altaf of Kasganj Killed in custody; The body of a 22-year-old Muslim youth was found under suspicious circumstances at a police station in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj district. Police say that the youth, Altaf, who was called for questioning in the case of the disappearance of the minor girl, committed suicide in the toilet built in the police station premises.

Family alleged murder

According to the relatives of the deceased, Altaf was picked up by the police from his house on Monday evening. His father alleged that his son was murdered in the police station. The family got information about the incident from local journalists at 6 pm on Tuesday.

The father of the deceased, Chahat Miya, who works as a labourer, said, “Police came to my house on Monday evening and claimed that Altaf had kidnapped a girl. I handed over my son to the police at 8 pm. I went to the police station to get further information and a copy of the FIR but the policemen misbehaved and warned me not to come to the police station again.

On Tuesday evening, I got information from local journalists that my son had died inside the police station. By the time I reached the station again, he was taken to a nearby hospital. There the doctors declared him brought dead. My son was innocent, he had no criminal past. He was murdered in police custody." Relatives said Altaf was not produced before a magistrate in the court on Tuesday.

Altaf of Kasganj Killed in custody

On Wednesday, Kasganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohan Botre released a video statement in which he claimed that Altaf had used a wire from his jacket to kill himself.

"Altaf was brought to the police station for questioning in connection with the charges of IPC 363 (kidnapping) and 366 (forcing the woman to marry him)," the SP said.

“When the police questioned him, he asked to go to the bathroom. The police officer sent him to the bathroom inside the lockup and after a while when he did not come out, an employee went to check. He had tightened the hood of his jacket by tying a pipe around his neck."

He died in the hospital after 5-10 minutes of treatment. The dead body has been sent for post-mortem. Five policemen have been suspended for negligence in duty.
