The government has continuity with top BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, and S. Jaishankar continuing as the ministers of Defence, Home, Finance, and External Affairs, respectively.

Nitin Gadkari will also remain the Road Transport and Highways Minister, while Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been appointed as the Agriculture and Rural Development minister. Former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will take over as the Power Minister, and Piyush Goyal has been assigned the Commerce portfolio. Jyotiraditya Scindia will handle the Telecom and DoNER portfolios.

This announcement of portfolios concludes a crucial aspect of government formation. While the BJP has retained key ministries, it has made concessions to allies to strike a balance. The next political battle is likely to occur after the oath ceremony of the newly elected MPs in the Lok Sabha when the election for the new Speaker takes place.

Allies JD(U) and TDP have requested the position for their party representatives, and it remains unclear if the BJP will yield to this pressure.

A special session of the House has been called on June 18, during which the remaining procedures, including the inauguration of the 18th Lok Sabha, the President’s address to the joint sitting of Parliament, the oath-taking of new MPs, and a decision on the Budget date, are expected to be addressed
