Ground Report | New Delhi: People displaced in India in 2020; Displacement is increasing due to natural disasters caused by climate change, '37 million new people from 145 countries and territories were displaced due to natural disasters in 2020.
According to the World Migration Report 2022, from 2008 to 2020, 2.4 million new people had to be displaced due to drought and 11 lakh people due to the sharp increase in temperature.
Most of the new displacements in the past year have been related to weather-related events, such as 14.6 million people displaced by storms and 1.41 million people displaced by floods. In 2020, the sharp rise in temperature forced 46,000 new people to leave their homes and settle elsewhere due to the drought.

"In 2019, where 315 million people were displaced within country borders, in 2020, 45 million people were forced to migrate within their own country," according to the World Report on Migration.
According to the World Migration Report 2022, last year the Philippines had the largest displacement of 5.1 million people due to natural disasters. The largest displacement due to disasters was in Asia. By the end of 2020, 5 million new people in China and around 4 million new people in India were displaced due to natural disasters.
According to IOM Director General Antonio Vittorino, “We are witnessing a paradox that has never been seen before in human history. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while billions of people have to remain completely in one place, there are also millions of people who have had to face the brunt of displacement in their own country.

The magnitude of increasing displacement due to climate change can be inferred from the fact that this factor was responsible for 76% of total global displacement in 2020. 42 countries in the world cited conflict and violence as the reason for displacement in their country. , while some 144 countries cited natural disasters as the reason.
The previous World Migration Report, published in December 2019, found that 61 percent of the 28 million people who suffered internal displacement in 148 countries around the world in 2018 were displaced due to natural disasters.
