On January 7, when candidates sat down to write their essay paper for the 2021 Mains exam, not many expected a "googly" as it looked like they were appearing for a philosophy exam. Aspiring IAS aspirants were asked to write two essays, each containing an essay of between 1,000 and 1,200 words.

UPSC Mains Essay question paper, which had topics like 'Real is Rational and Rational is Real', went viral. Responding to this, a Twitter user wrote, "When the paper-setter passes away…breakup…it looks like a mains essay paper." IAS officer Avneesh Sharan tweeted, "Seeing the paper gives me a feeling of 'the world is false' and 'I am divine."

The question paper, divided into two sections, had a total of 8 questions or topics on which the essay was to be written. There were four questions in each section. Generally, every year questions are on national-international, historical, economic, social, or philosophical topics. But surprisingly, this time all the questions were on philosophical topics.

Chhattisgarh cadre IAS officer Avneesh Sharan tweeted the question paper and wrote, 'Seeing the paper of the main exam essay, the feeling of 'world is false' and 'Aham Brahmasmi' is coming".

IAS officer, Awanish Sharan wrote, "There is a common saying among #UPSC aspirants that After a couple of attempts, one will become a philosopher! Guess the Essay paper was set by some UPSC veteran for sure".
