Why Genocide Sri Lanka is trending

Ground Report | New Delhi: Why Genocide Sri Lanka is trending; The hashtag '#GenocideSriLanka' is trending across India, as part of a country-wide campaign to raise awareness of the ongoing genocide of the Tamil people by the state of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's 30-year civil war, which ended in 2009, drew international attention to war crimes and serious human rights violations following the killing, murder, rape and torture of millions of Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka's northeastern region by the Sri Lankan armed forces.

Efforts to establish accountability for the massacre of the Tamil civilians was almost achieved when a soldier from the Sri Lankan armed forces was sentenced for murdering eight Tamil civilians. However, this was reversed when the president of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, pardoned the soldier, keeping to his pledge of releasing “war heroes”. Accountability for war crimes has still not been achieved, and justice for the war crimes is still being sought by many, including the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora.

During the final phase of the civil war, an estimated 100,000 Tamils were killed in Mulivakal. A memorial was erected at the University of Jaffna in memory of these last civilians killed in 2019. The monument was demolished on 9 January 2021 after the University Grants Commission called this monument a threat to the unity of Sri Lanka.

Public Security Minister Sarath Veerasekera said that "no one should be allowed to remember the dead terrorists". The demolition triggered protests and hunger strikes by students and other Tamils, who were distressed by the demolition. "It is a deliberately provocative act, knowing full well that the memorials are associated with sentiments," said a Tamil legislator.

The movement, which started last night, is currently trending on the second spot on Twitter with over 18,000 tweets and counting.
