Which foreign countries accepts UPI payments?

UPI services are now available in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, the Ministry of External Affairs announced today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined a virtual event to launch Unified Payments Interface UPI and RuPay card services in these nations.

Users can make UPI payments in Sri Lanka and Mauritius by linking their bank account to a UPI-compatible mobile app. They need to provide recipient information such as bank account number, amount, and currency when setting up their account.

Moreover, the Indian government persistently champions the utilisation of its digital payment infrastructure, notably the UPI, to facilitate streamlined cross-border transactions. These initiatives aim to reduce the expenses associated with fund transfers and remittance payments.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on social media, “The launch of India's UPI services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius underscores the robust linkages between our countries.”

PM Modi said, "This initiative will benefit the Indian diaspora in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. It will lessen the reliance on hard currency. Enabling the use of UPI and Rupay card facilities will allow payments in our own currency at a cheaper rate."

Today, they launched the RuPay card services in Mauritius. The extension of RuPay card services in Mauritius allows Mauritian banks to issue cards based on the RuPay mechanism in Mauritius. This will make it easier to use the RuPay Card for settlements both in India and Mauritius.
