At the center is the story of the Trinity test and its world-altering consequences.

The film delves into Oppenheimer's (played by Cillian Murphy) emotions, from initial shock to final regret, as he witnesses the unimaginable power unleashed by the bomb. Participants in the Manhattan Project also grapple with concerns about the reality of the atomic bomb. Its detonation changed the world, upsetting the political balance and setting the arms race on a dangerous path toward potential total devastation.

While "Oppenheimer" draws inspiration from the biography "American Prometheus" by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, it navigates a delicate balance between biography and historical drama.

The film depicts the challenges facing Robert Oppenheimer and his involvement in the effort to win the arms race during World War II. In particular, the Trinity test, the culminating experiment in atomic energy research, is of significant importance to the narrative.

An explosion that would change history

The tape described the confusion that surrounded the possibility of a type of power that until then only existed at a theoretical level. In fact, in the year 1945, no verifiable evidence of a nuclear explosion had been found. Release parameters were varying widely. Scientists at Los Alamos, the site for nuclear energy research, had doubts about whether the bomb would work.

The decision for a controlled detonation was driven by the urgency of the situation. Despite concerns about potential failure, the pressing need to stay ahead in the race against time and World War II resource exhaustion was paramount. Moreover, the fear that German scientists might be working on a similar device posed a global danger and a threat to the allies' favourable outcome in the war.

Robert Oppenheimer remained steadfast in his belief that the bomb design was reliable and stood a high chance of success. A test using one of the plutonium bombs from the laboratory was scheduled to gather vital data on the consequences of a nuclear explosion.

Until then, the notion of such a detonation had remained purely hypothetical. The Trinity test aimed to provide critical insights into this groundbreaking and unprecedented technology.

Trinity Test: The Beginning of Nuclear Terror

The urgency of World War II and the fear that German scientists would develop a similar device prompted the decision for a controlled detonation known as the Trinity Test. Failure could have dire consequences for the project and the chances of the allies in the war.

Robert Oppenheimer's belief in the reliability of the bomb led to the test using one of the laboratory's plutonium bombs. They conducted the Trinity Test in a nearly inaccessible area at the Alamogordo Bombing Range to collect critical data on nuclear explosions, a topic that was previously only theoretical.

Conventional blasting confirmed the site's suitability for safety on May 7, 1945. Pleased with the results, preparations for the Trinity Test continued. They built observation bunkers and surrounded the arrival of the plutonium core on July 12 with tight security measures, followed by the addition of non-nuclear components.

Despite doubts among some prominent figures, the bomb would go off on July 16. The nuclear age dawned when the device detonated over the New Mexico desert, leaving an indelible image of the iconic atomic mushroom cloud.

The film "Oppenheimer" depicts this historic moment in a terrifying yet fascinating technical sequence, capturing the birth of atomic energy and the beginning of a new era.
