Three American states, namely California, Nevada, and Arizona, are facing a significant threat from Hurricane Hilary, categorized as a level four storm. The cyclone is projected to make landfall in Baja California, Mexico. The National Hurricane Center has forecasted that the storm's strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rainfall from Sunday morning until night. Consequently, rain warnings have been issued for Southern California.

According to the National Weather Service, parts of Southern California and Southern Nevada are projected to receive between 7-15 cm of rain, potentially resulting in flash flood-like conditions. This rainfall is anticipated to persist until Wednesday.

The potential for flood impacts is significant, with approximately 26 million people in the southwest area of ​​the US at risk due to this storm.

Hurricane Hilary: Which areas will be impacted?

The National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service have issued a tropical storm warning for several areas of Southern California, including L.A., Orange, and San Diego Counties. Additionally, parts of Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura Counties are also included in the warning. This marks the first-ever issuance of a tropical storm warning for Southern California.

In Mexico, a contingency of 18,000 soldiers remains on standby for relief and rescue operations. Additionally, sandbags are being distributed to residents in various regions, such as Arizona, to safeguard their properties.

Why Hurricane Hilary Striking California is an Uncommon Occurrence?

While tropical storms frequently impact Mexico, it is quite uncommon for them make landfall in California. However, such an event occurred back in 1939 when a tropical storm made landfall on Long Beach in Southern California.

Experts suggest that the occurrence of unusual weather events, which can be attributed to climate change, is becoming increasingly common worldwide, including within the United States.
