Another remake dilemma: Thalapathy Vijay 'Leo' copy/inspired by which Hollywood movie

After great box office months, Thalapathy Vijay- Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Leo is about the hit the theatres. And, the hype of the film is like never before. The film is breaking records in advance booking overseas, particularly in the UK. The makers have left no stone unturned in promoting the big-south Indian release in the overseas market.

However, there are issues at the local, and national levels.

The distribution mess

If reports are believed, the producers are asking for an incredible 80% share from the first-weekend collection of the film in the regional theatres. The theatre's owners have suggested 60% at max. There are reports of the film to not being released by any prominent national chain. On the other side, there was a case in the court for an early mining show of the film for the first weekends. The court has decided to leave the decision to the Tamil Nadu government.

Due to the 4-week OTT window, the film is not released through national chains. That to say, the film will be released on an OTT 4-weeks after the theatrical release. Regardless, of the chaos. The buzz for the film in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka is immense. There is an incredible buzz for the film in the northern belts also. Although, the same zeal is not reciprocated by the makers. The film is not being marketed, or distributed well in the northern theatres. Most likely, the film might be badly dubbed, impacting the great theatrical you expect from such films. But, there is enough fan-following for the film to drive the audience. However, the makers have indeed missed the trick in the hindi-belt.

Some reports suggest, the film has already done a business of 130+ crores worldwide, pre-sales.

About the film

The film created great buzz when the trailer dropped. There were speculations that the movie might be inspired by the 2005 Hollywood movie A History of Violence, or another South Indian 1995 movie Baashha. The film stars, Thalapathy Vijay, Trisha, and Sanjay Dutt. It is written, and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and the music is by Anirudh. We might see a glimpse of Rolex, played by Suriya in the film. That’s what the trailer suggests.

The film is said to be part of Lokesh Cinematic Universe  (LCU). The LCU includes Karthi starrer Kaithi and Kamal Hasaan starrer Vikram. This is one of the most anticipated movies in South India.

The director has mentioned in an interview to not miss the first 10 minutes of the film. This is arguably one of his most violent, and gory films.
