Indian Football team won the SAFF ( South Asian Football Federation) 2023 by beating Kuwait in a penalty shootout. While it was a great team effort, but the internet is hailing the miraculous save by the team’s goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.
Gurpreet was born into a Sikh family in Mohali in 1992. And he started playing football at the age of 9. He has a tremendous record and is one of the five Indian players to play professionally in, and the first to play in the top-division European clubs.
In 2010, he was first signed in the I-League by East Bengal. He had played for East Bengal in the youth team. In 2015, he was signed by the Norwegian club Stabæk Fotball. In 2017, he joined Bengaluru. Hence, in Indian Super League, he plays for Bengaluru FC, for which Sunil Chettri also plays.
He is a graduate of DAV College, Chandigarh, and he is an admirer of Manchester United. At least, he was in 2015.
Sandhu showed great calibre even in the semi-final match between Lebanon. Even in that match, India won by a penalty shootout, where Sandhu emerged as a star player.
About the match
Kuwait and India played an intense final at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru Karnataka. Kuwait scored first at the 14-minute point. But the Indian team was quick to react with a 38th-minute goal. After that, the match remained goalless but very competitive. For most parts, the Kuwait team was camping in India’s half. Further, there were a lot of fouls from India’s side, and seven Kuwait players were booked for the yellow card.
Eventually, India won the penalty shootout in sudden death. This is India’s 9th title in 14 years. Further, they have been runners-up at least four times.
